Leitmotifs in Secrets of the Forbidden Spinjitzu

The Scrolls of Forbidden Spinjitzu

An ominous and mystical leitmotif usually played on duduk, composed of multiple two-note descending phrases.

Aspheera

A sinister stringed melody representing Aspheera. The theme starts out with the serpentine motif before branching off into its longer, tragic yet chaotic-sounding melody.

Char

A humorous, percussive leitmotif representing Aspheera’s assistant. The general purpose of the leitmotif calls back to that of Kruncha and Nuckal, although note- and rhythm-wise there is no apparent relation.

Clutch Powers

An adventurous piece played on horns and drums to represent the famed explorer Clutch Powers, evocative of pieces like The Raiders March from the Indiana Jones franchise.

Paperboys

The unsleeping paperboys burst onto the scene with this mellow three-note riff (and its variations), played and accompanied by all manner of classic funk instrumentation, from jazz guitar to synth keyboard and clavinet.

The Never Realm

This graceful theme is, notably, the first theme to represent a location, instead of a character, object, or idea. Most versions of this leitmotif are composed of three twelve-note arpeggio patterns on strings, although the specifics vary between instances.

Ice Fishers

A laid-back but proud melody composed of a repeated ten-note pattern and its variations. It is played usually on instruments you would typically hear in folk music, although during scenes like the village fortification montage in “Fire Maker” the leitmotif is played on orchestral strings and horns.

Sorla

A short, trilling cue on the flute represents the Ice Fisher elder who mentors the ninja at various times.

Boma and Uthaug

The comedic Ice Fisher duo is represented by this bright, slurred leitmotif on a bowed string instrument with broken chords played on plucked strings.

Corruption

A slow and ominous 8-note motif representing the corruption of Zane and the Never Realm under both the forbidden scroll’s and Vex’s influence. The melody itself is actually an altered, darker version of the scroll’s 8-note motif for this reason, and it is often associated with Vex because of his involvement in the corruption of Zane into the Ice Emperor.

Vex

A high-pitched, descending half-step glissando on strings represents Vex’s scheming and bitter nature.

The Blizzard Samurai

A dark, repeating four-note phrase on strings which represents The Ice Emperor’s army. The notes themselves are the first three notes of Zane’s theme in a minor key, referencing their relation to Zane’s power as the Ice Emperor.

Akita

A serene but lonesome melody typically played on flute to represent Akita the Formling. There are possibly connections to the Ninjago theme in certain bits of note structure, but they aren’t substantial enough to prove any intention behind these similarities.

Krag

A majestic theme on horns and light percussion represents the last Yeti of the Never Realm, first appearing intimidating before its soft and gentle appearances later on in the story.

The Traveler’s Tree

A quiet and serene theme representing the Traveler’s Tree and by extension, Tea.
